About The ASCR Network
The Adult Stem Cell Research (ASCR) Network is an internet-based project of the Cell Therapy Foundation designed to be a well-maintained and reliable source of information for physicians and the public regarding adult stem cell research. ASCR seeks to disseminate the latest scientific news in the adult stem cell arena, identify leading researchers in the field, and locate key clinical trials in order to help patients and research unite in a beneficial and timely manner.
Additionally, a future goal of the ASCR Network is to be a community of education and collaboration where news, ideas and research will merge in real-time with the aim of translating the best therapeutic practices to the patient in the most efficient, lay-friendly way possible.
While much progress has been made in the last few years, many therapies are still experimental and/or not ready for use in human trials. Promising data from NUIG researchers studying osteoarthritis

Scientists at Galway’s branch of the National University of Ireland (NUIG) have successfully completed a Phase I clinical trial to study effects of adipose-derived stem cells on osteoarthritis. The adult stem cells were injected into injured cartilage sites in the hopes of generating new tissue growth for the patients.
Bioheart, Inc. announces new study for Degenerative Disc Disease

An announcement from Bioheart, Inc. indicates they will evaluate the healing capacity of their adipose-derived stem cell treatment, AdipoCell, by enrolling patients suffering from degenerative disc disease (DDD) in a new study.
The study, which has been approved by the International Cellular Medicine Society’s (ICMS) Institutional Review Board (IRB), will enroll up to 100 patients.
Expansion of hMSCs using synthetic microcarriers in xeno-free medium looks promising

An article from last month reviews an attempt at long-term expansion of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) using synthetic microcarriers. Mesenchymal stem cells are currently used to treat a variety of diseases, including lung injuries and heart disease. This experiment yielded promising results that would have a positive impact on the growing need for large-scale expansion of hMSCs for therapeutic purposes.
Results from Cytori's PRECISE trial indicate benefits from administration of Cytori Cell Therapy

An April 14 announcement from Cytori Therapeutics indicates the favorable results from their PRECISE clinical trial will be published in an upcoming issues of American Heart Journal. This 36 month trial was a first-in-man trial involving injection of adipose stem cells into myocardial tissue for heart disease and 27 patients participated.
Cytori’s therapeutic product, Cytori Cell Therapy, is a mixed population of adipose-derived stem cells, known collectively as ADRCs, and the stem cells were injected directly into damaged, but still viable, areas of the heart in 21 of the patients. At both 6 and 18 months, the results show that exercise capacity was sustained in the treated group, but went down in the placebo group, and also indicated that ADRC’s may help prevent scar tissue from increasing after myocardial infarctions.
